GENERAL APPEARANCE & CHARACTERISTICS: The Thai
Ridgeback is a medium-sized, muscular dog with a wedge-shaped head, triangular ears that stand straight up, and a half-sickle
tail. The TRD's coat is short and smooth, with a reverse ridge of hair going up the back. This Pariah-type dog
is very active, loves to jump, climb, dig, and scavenge. TRDs are devoted to their family but wary of strangers.
The TRD falls under the following criteria when searching for a new dog. TRD Criteria Size:
Medium Grooming: Nominal Exercise: Daily Good With Other Dogs: Most of the time
Watch Dog: Excellent ARBA CLASSIFICATION: FCI-Standard N° 338 / 25. 02. 2004
/ GB ORIGIN: Thailand. UTILIZATION: Hunting and companion dog. DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE ORIGINAL
VALID STANDARD: 26.05.2003. FCI'S CLASSIFICATION: Group 5 Spitz and Primitive types, Section 7, Primitive. TYPE:
hunting dog, without working trial. HAIR COLOR: The Thai Ridgeback Dog comes in four solid
colors, but a breeder may add an extra touch by breaking down the colors by primary tones and hues of color within the fur.
This is done in order to better explain what the color of the puppy is. The four solid colors are blue, red, fawn
(light fawn: Isabella,) and black.
RIDGE: Now, the one thing everyone finds cool about
the TRD is the reverse ridge of hair running up the dog's back. There are a good number of ridges that have been identified
and described. On the other hand, there are an infinite number of patterns that may occur and are not shown in this
book. The following patterns are the most common: needle (Kaem ridge), Phaen ridge or feather (Thep-pa-nom ridge),
arrow (Tha-nu ridge), lute (Pin ridge), violin, bowling pin, Pho leaf and saddle (Bai-pho ridge, Ma ridge, or Bho-Di leaf),
Hu-kra-tai. The ridge should be symmetrical going down the middle of the back. This means that the left
side of the back should look like the right side of the back as if you're looking into a mirror. The ridge should stay
within the confines of the back. A TRD with an uneven ridge or without a ridge cannot be shown and should not be bred.
UKC & American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) standard: Hair: the hair growing in the opposite direction to the
rest of the coat forms the ridge on the top region. It should be clearly defined from other parts of the back.
There are various shapes and lengths of ridge, but whichever ridge is there must be symmetrical on either side of the back
and within the width of the back. Crowns or whirls at the head of the ridge are acceptable.
